The ONE thing that made me gain weight!

It is amazing all the articles written about what it is that is making our fellow humans overweight and obese.  I have compiled a list of articles listing out what is making us fat. I will post some links at the end of this article.

I’ve heard such a list of “the one thing” that make us fat, but I don’t believe 1 thing makes us gain weight.  It is a list of things, combinations; the perfect storm.

What makes me Fat

So, what ONE thing on this list has made me fat?  How about you?

There are so many myths about what is making our friends, neighbors, family AND enemies fat that it is getting difficult to recognize the actual culprit.   We KNOW what to do, we KNOW what to eat, we KNOW we are gaining weight.

ALL OF THESE MADE ME FAT… and ATTENTION TO ALL OF THESE made me thin again.  Each one of us has the ability to change our personal future.  Each one of us has free will.  It is a matter of being mindful and choosing the healthier alternative.

Temptation has always been there and it will continue to be there, we just need to learn to brush it away and grab an apple instead. (Pun intended)

Genesis 3:3

3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”  – BibleGateway.com NIV

My personal story:

I realized my health was declining, my weight was increasing, my pain levels were increasing, and I was sick all the time.  Hence, attention to prevention (or in my case repair).

Through attention to what I eat, how much I move, what toxins I surround and slather upon myself, and disproving the time and money myths, I have been able to lose the weight, gain TONS of energy, lose the pharmaceuticals, and cut back to one cold per year.  My asthma is all but eliminated, my depression is controlled without Rx, I don’t need pain meds all the time, and I can walk 60 miles at a time.

MAKE IT A GREAT WEEK!!!

Waist Line Reduction–Weight Loss is so Blasé & Fat is not Beautiful!

Let me be honest… The numbers on the scale SUCK!  The size of your clothing and how they fit are a MUCH better predictor of your health, and be honest… That IS what it should all be about!

To many of us have been told for too long that the numbers on the scale are what matter! The number on the scale may have some semblance of your current state of health, but really.  Dump it!

I’ve been the skinny mini who hated the term. I’ve been over 200 pounds. I’ve plateaued at 160 for YEARS.  And I even bought into the belief that I needed to “weigh” a certain amount.

Not Anymore! Today I focus on how my clothes fit, how I feel, my energy levels, and the absence of needed pharmaceuticals.

A 150 pound woman who lifts weights, eats right, and makes smart healthy choices will look different than a woman of the same height who never works out, eats whatever is on special at the market or restaurant and exposes herself to anything and everything you can buy at the grocery store. (Photo from Macey Brooke’s CPT blog)

150_pound_woman_by_Lacey_Brooke_CPT

I am also tired of hearing about all sizes are beautiful.  While I believe that all humans are beautiful, I don’t believe all sizes are.  When a human cannot walk from the car to the store and shop because their muscles and bones cannot hold them up, I do NOT believe that is beautiful.  (The size, not the person.)  I’m sorry, I just don’t.

When a person begins to see the Waist Line increase, the health maladies increase as well. Productivity in the work place decreases, absenteeism increases, medical bills increase. Statistics prove it.

Obese womanObese couple

I don’t see suffering and illness as beautiful.  The people inside the body are VERY beautiful! They may also be emotionally abusing themselves or even oblivious to the state their body has fallen into. They may not even realize why they are sick so often or sick and tired of being tired and sick.

Enter a different view of yourself! When we love our selves, treat ourselves as God’s chosen, feed ourselves as if we were offering a meal to HIM, we get different results than when we just shove anything and everything into our mouths.

This is why I offer Waist Line Reduction team coaching classes and Healthy living trainings in the work place, a monthly support group to those in the area looking to find others and Simple steps anyone can begin taking to improve their health, increase their energy, reduce their chances of being diagnosed with degenerative diseases, and possibly even eliminating pharmaceuticals. (as I did) Finally, I offer an amazing system based on sports nutrition. Nothing artificial, safe for competitive athletes and nursing moms.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!! I looked in the mirror this morning and I actually liked what I saw— not quite so “thick” when I turn sideways—it’s a combination of it all, you were the catalyst I was needing!!!”

My clients are seeing AMAZING differences in their daily energy levels, in the way their clothes fit, in their self esteem, and in how people greet them.  I find GREAT joy in celebrating THEIR victories and successes!

I actually walk around with my shirt off around the house again because I’m not afraid anymore that, if I bend in a certain way, my fat rolls are going to disgust my wife.

Building a Health Community-Supporting Each Other

There’s no need to attempt to do it alone!

Things are more fun when we share the experience with others.

We tend to continue doing things we enjoy and find support in challenges through others who are like minded.

For this reason, we have begun building communities of people working toward a common goal of improving their personal health, and committed to sharing that experience and supporting each other throughout the transition. And ITS WORKING!

Feel_Good_Fast_-_Teamwork_support

I currently have local teams building, who meet once a week. For quality control we have a limited number of spaces for this new community of support, teamwork, and coaching.

I also have a private community of people from all over the United States who work together, some are friends and some are new acquaintances, all are committed to building each other and themselves up through community and commitment.

The 5 pairs of shoes above represent five women in 3 different states who are currently on this journey. Contact me if you would like additional information or want to be connected with other like minded individuals.

Looking for improved health? Looking for increased energy? Looking for others who are finding it?  Check us out!

Migraines, Pharmaceuticals, & Fat–Gone

In 2001 I moved from Indiana to Florida and took a high school teaching job.  I was taking five pharmaceuticals for asthma and depression (and side effects from the Rx).

On November 4th I attained a migraine.  I say attained because it stayed with me, in differing degrees, until February of 2002. I went to the family physician who had no answers, then to the neurologist who did MRI’s and scans to be sure there wasn’t any brain tumors. Eventually he added another drug to my protocol. It took another month or so after starting the meds until we got them at the “right level” so I wouldn’t have as many side effects.

In the days and years that followed I would get occasional migraines and headaches that were excruciating, until I made some personal changes in my life.

I began by making a few healthier choices daily.  Food based supplements, healthier food options, and eliminated many of the toxins in our home. (None of the nasty, strong smelling cleaners with poisons.)

As a result of conscious choices, and an excellent source of nutrition, I began losing weight, healthfully.  (By weight I don’t mean a number on a scale – I mean that my clothes fit better and my measurements decreased.)

A side benefit of the fat being gone was that I was able to wean off the anti-depressants, the asthma medications, the meds for the side effects, and the daily migraine pill.

My depression eased way off and I found other ways to keep it in check, like cognitive therapy.  It wasn’t for almost a year that I realized I just wasn’t getting headaches any more, AND… I had a new, thinner me with increased energy and a zest for life!

It never occurred to me that I could help my body by feeding it “good food”.  In agriculture, when a plant has a symptom we give it “food” to fix the nitrogen or other deficiencies.  When our car doesn’t run right, we listen to the symptoms, and repair what is wrong… we don’t feed it crappy gas, then expect it to run smoothly.

I am so happy to be able to share with others, what has worked for me.  Contact me for more information.

4 Ways to Begin to Feel Good Fast

When you feel blue, out of energy, glued to the couch, and unable to move, stop for a moment. You aren’t dead yet and you have a choice.

lifeinbonitasprings.com_bovine_mounts

Take a deep breath, focus on that breath, as my friend from Integrative Mindfulness taught me.  Center yourself for a moment, then choose a different path.

Some ideas to begin down the new road…

Snail_Mail_lifeinbonitasprings

Move.  You don’t need to run the Boston Marathon, just begin to get some exercise.  Walk to your mailbox, park a couple spaces farther away from the store, do some leg lifts while you sit on the couch in the evening.  Just move.

Dress_it_up_lifeinbonitasprings

Grab some WATER. Say you don’t like water?  Try adding some mint leaves, a dash of no sugar added fruit juice, slice of lemon, or sliced strawberries.  Dress it up, put it in a beautiful glass, and enjoy this life giving treat.

More_Veggies_lifeinbonitasprings

Eat more veggies. I don’t want to hear, “I don’t like them”.  You’re a grown up, you can find ways to make veggies that you like to eat. Try new recipes.  I prefer http://AllRecipes.com they have a TON of recipes, lots of reviews and we rarely fail when we choose a recipe to try.  Don’t be afraid to doctor them up a bit to fit your tastes.

THERE. YOU. GO.

4 WAYS YOU CAN BEGIN TO START FEELING GOOD FAST.

A very special thank you, to my friend Chris Griffith of Life in Bonita Springs for the photos in my blog!

So, apparently I cannot count… here are 4 NOT 3 ways to begin to feel better.

Movement is Key to Sustained Good Health

When my health was at my worst, my depression its worst, was when I was not moving. I was in a spiral and things just kept getting worse, until I chose to begin moving.

I moved a little at a time and gradually increased my duration and intensity. Today, I am a walker. (I don’t run, Zumba, or cross fit, I just walk and make smart healthy choices.)

Today, I want to offer to you, the choice to begin dancing like no one is watching.  Whether that is on the dance floor all night or just in the comfort of your own living room, or at the beach…

Once the movement begins, the healthier choices begin, the spiral makes a 180 and you discover more energy, fewer aches and pains, and in my case no more pharmaceuticals. (I’m down 55 pounds and off 6 prescription meds for good.)

Want to get healthy, not sure where to start.

When I started trying to get healthier, I wasn’t sure where to start. I tried diets of all types and yo-yo’d for years, but without a road map of where I was going, it was a futile attempt.  Lose weight, pack it back on plus some more.

Today, I want to share some resources that could help.

1. Decide WHY you want to get healthier, why EXACTLY and WRITE
IT DOWN!

2. Journal what you eat and drink, EVERYTHING, for a week.

a. Keep a written journal of everything you put in your mouth.

b. Use an app like http://myfitnesspal.com I really like this one to use on my phone AND my laptop… whichever I choose. (I also use the Shaklee 180 app that comes with my maintenance program.)

c. The average American over-consumes 300 calories a day. It isn’t
until we begin to pay very close attention to what we consume that
we realize where our challenges lie. (Many times this is from Drinks) This does NOT mean to substitute with “sugar free” options. Artificial sweeteners add a whole new set of problems.

3. Begin to move – the options here are limitless.

a.  I did it with walking, lots of walking. Park and walk the whole
outdoor mall, walk around the block, walk a 5K event, walk if
you haven’t “moved” with purpose in ages, simply begin small
walk to the mailbox and back, do it twice if you can.

b.  Join a gym, a lot of my friends have done this, I prefer to spend
my dollars elsewhere.

c.  Hire a personal trainer.  Get specific advice that works for YOU.

d.  Pick a cause & work toward an event. (I have done 60 mile walks)

4. Choose healthier options that taste GREAT!

a.  Knock out all artificial sweeteners, colors, & flavors.

b.  Look for new recipes, or do what I do, make healthier substitutions
for some of the ingredients.

c. Pick 1 thing and do it till you’ve got it down, then pick something
else to master.

Science mimics life–children with degenerative diseases.

I’m amazed and somewhat disheartened at the large number of children we see these days with degenerative diseases that, in days gone by, were only diseases of the aged.

Why the change? The change, I believe, is very multi-faceted.  I will attach some videos that explain a bit why I feel this way.

  1. Our Dietary choices – it is becoming common knowledge that the Standard American Diet (sad) is grossly lacking in nutrition and the sustenance our bodies need to continue building healthy cells and thus healthy bodies & babies.  An example of a study that showed very similar results in test animals was Pottinger’s Cats:
    Dr. Price & Pottenger’s Cats (6 minutes 46 seconds)

This site also offers some excellent insight to what these studies and research mean to each of us.

  2. Our Body Care choices – In an effort to be the best looking, the youngest looking, the tannest, have the smoothest, most-manageable hair, yet we – many times – don’t take the time to stop and read ingredients and believe that because they are sold over the counter they must be safe.  However the industry regulates itself and writes its own rules… and if you use an average of 8 products a day under the “allowable toxic limit” of 1, say .80 then after you slather on your 8 products, you are now at a potential of 6.4x above the “safe level”.
The Story of Cosmetics (8 minutes 18 seconds)

  3. The Cleaning Products we choose – We bring products into our homes that are advertised to “kill germs” to “clean without work” and such sound great in the advertising but can actually harm our families.  We bring in neurotoxins and other poisons with the intention of protecting our children.

Toxic Brew Part one (9 minutes 23 seconds)

  4. Unclean/un-pure water – Finally, we no longer drink fresh, clean water.  We drink water from bottles that can leach toxins into the water when the bottles are transported and allowed to reach hot temperatures, our tap water contains Flouride and we aren’t given a choice in the matter. Antibiotics, hormones, and pharmaceuticals & chlorine are showing up in our tap water.  Fresh water is becoming more difficult to come by.

What do we do?

We stay calm, focus on each issue one at a time, and make a conscious choice to pay attention to prevention and protect our families, our children, our grandchildren and the other future generations.  We’ve voted to make the popular products available with our dollars for years.

As we begin redirecting our spending to healthier choices, 1 choice at a time we begin to see a difference in our own household, then those of our friends, and eventually our world.

The change begins with me.

For more information on ways to begin redirecting toward healthier choices or for a personal consultation and road map for you and your household, contact me.

Make it a GREAT day!
